Dodge Ram oil change, How to change the oil and filter on a 2014 Dodge Ram

Oh welcome to another video by Jim the
car guy failing to work on 2014 – Dodge
Ram with the 5.7 liter engine we’re just
going to do some basic maintenance we’re
going to change the railroad filter and
then we’re going to reset the
maintenance reminder light at the same
time all right I’m just going to eat
there I’m going to show you what to do
and where the filter is located don’t
forget it’s quite my channel and if you
like I’m doing individual let’s go
underneath here and take a look
okay you’ll know drain plugs in this
particular model is directly underneath
the the middle of the the engine here
this is the plug year it looks like it’s
going to be a 13 or a 14 millimeter
so we’re going to remove this we’re
going to drain the oil into a suitable
container and we’re going to go walk
into the front over here and we remove
the oil filter so let’s let’s get a
wrench and let’s take that out it is an
example of some of the tools that you’re
going to need to do the oil change you
don’t really need a lot of specialty
tools basically what you need is you
just need a socket thirteen millimeter
to take it off a ratchet and one thing
you never want to do is I’ll show you
you never want to use an open end wrench
to remove the oil drain plug the reason
I’m going to show you this is if you put
this on here like this and you push on
and this is really tight this wrench is

going to have a tendency to round that
drain plug right off and you kind of
have a problem getting the plug out the
only way you ever want to do is you want
to use one a socket like this or you
want to use the box end of a wrench all
right so let’s drain this out and I’ll
show you how it goes
remember this set you can even use the
boxing of a wrench like this but I
always prefer use a ratchet more to
easier to break it loose from the
ratchet wrench
here’s about the additional level
obviously you want to have a suitable
container underneath it to catch the oil
that comes out of it
yeah
we’re going to let that loyal train out
but in the meantime we want to make sure
that our gasket is in good condition
here which is and now we’re going to let
the oil turning out once the oil drains
out we’re going to come back we’re going
to put the oil drain plug back in and I
will move up to the front and replace
the filter now this is what the filter
looks like up in the front of the car
this is the cott the cap that I use to
put over the top like this and then you
can use a ratchet to put the ratchet on
here to take this off there is on a type
of filter tools to get this off that’s
just one example another example would
be a tool like this a band ratchet it
goes around it and you can remove it
from the car with this also depending on
how much room you have up there all
right but I’ll show you we will first
and show you how to do it so we just
gonna let this drain out a little bit
now when it stops dripping then we’ll
going to put the plug back in and we’ll
we’ll wrap this job when you put the
plug back here you always screw the plug
in by hand
you never put a ratchet on it until
after it screw it in all the way and
then you can tighten it up with your
ratchet you don’t want to put too tight
because you don’t want to strip the oil
pan out dry off the oil that’s
underneath there and now we’re going to
move up to the front and we’re going to
change that that filter up in the front
looking at it from underneath the bottom
this is the front subframe that’s the
front of the engine and this is your oil
filter right up here now you can either
use that wrench that I told you about it
goes onto the filter just like this and
you loosen it once you have it loose
then you can go up there and just turn
the filter out and let drain out for a
little bit let it drain into a suitable
container and once it finishes draining
then we’re going to walk and we’re going
to take that filter down and we’ll
replace it with the with the new one now
when you take this filter out that
filter right there you want to make sure
that see that ring right on there you
want to make sure that overing comes off
on the old filter and doesn’t remain up
on that housing up that oh let’s let it
drain out a little bit and then we’ll
take it down
that’s a little bit of a tight fit
underneath the bottom here so I’m going
to take this filter out and be careful
you don’t drop it because it will make
quite a mess as it is this one here is
going to make a mess anyway because it
actually hits the top of the front axle
housing I’m going to take that down and
I’ll put the focus down for a second
okay that felt that does make quite a
mess up underneath there now remember
they told you about that o-ring coming
down you see how this year the o-ring is
not there it came right off it stayed in
the filter so that’s a good thing you
always want to make sure that that came
off all right next thing we’re going to
do is with a reinstall our new filter
but I got to get a new pair of gloves
first okay I’ll come right back next
thing we’re going to do now is we’re
going to reinstall our filter back up
and here we made sure that the o-ring is
down now let’s put it back on now the
new filter you got to put a slight B of
oil on the gasket here doesn’t have to
be a lot just a little bit and then
we’ll take this double screw it right up
into this housing right here and it’s
filled up you just tighten it on by hand
as tight as you possibly can you don’t
need to put a wrench on it all right
we’re going to draw you up underneath
you and then we’re going to lower down
we’re going to put the oil back in so
let me lower it down and we’ll come
right okay now that we got the truck
back down on the ground I just want to
point out that there’s been a lot of
controversy on the internet about
different weights oil that people think
that they should be
in the vehicle this one calls for a 5w
20 and that’s exactly what we’re going
to put in you don’t want to put anything
heavier in it you don’t want to put
anything in a lighter so if the
manufacturer calls for that weight oil
make sure you use it so let me grab you
I’m going to put it in no we have to
look at this up on the computer I know
how much what elbows in this it takes
actually 7 quarts ago you’re not sure I
just put in five and start and check it
and see what consult your owners manual
right 5w 20 very important make sure you
use a phone so you don’t make a mess and
always make sure that it says 5w 20
that’s what it cost all right so let’s
put it in and
get this job started and get out
after you’ve got your 7 quarts of oil in
that you’re going to take care your
filter and then your funnel out make
sure you screw your cap back on and then
we’re going to stop it up let it run for
about 3 to 5 seconds let the oil
circulate and then we’re going to come
back over and check the oil level
anything the key will started
let it sit for just a minute well you
can pick out wipe you stick down make
sure it’s nice and clean and we just
going to put it back in make sure it
goes down a little the way and then
let’s pull it out and check our oil
level to make sure it’s up to the full
mark which it is it’s right up to the
full month now where it belongs
all right that’s it we’re all set next
thing we’re going to do is we’re going
to just look underneath the trucks make
sure we have no leaks whatsoever and
make sure the oil drain plug is a dry
and until we’re going to wrap it up over
the website now we’re going to reset
that maintenance ream on okay after the
oil change is performed there’s two
different reset procedures one of them
is to reset the oil change reminder life
the other one is a service perform
service indicator reset so let me show
you how to do the oil change reset first
you get in the truck
you do not stock the truck you keep your
foot off the brake pedal you press the
button here to start Itzel everything
lights up on a dashboard when it lights
up on the dashboard you have to step on
the accelerator three times within ten
seconds to reset the oil maintenance
light so we’re going to do that one
first
all right we’re going to press the
button everything lights up and now
we’re going to step on the accelerator
one two three times within ten seconds
and that resets the maintenance remind
the light for the oil change dirt
sorry about that the next thing we’re
going to do
one two three
okay to reset the the oil change
reminder light you get any truck you
close the door you press the X the
button to start the vehicle up the start
button right here you press it do not
step on the accelerator I mean on a
brake pedal you take your foot off the
brake pedal so the engine does not start
you turn it on so that all the lights on
the dashboard light up and then within
10 seconds you step on the accelerator
three times to the floor within 10
seconds so let’s do it
all right key on till all the lights
light up on the dashboard everything’s
live on the dashboard 1 2 3 and that
resets the the oil change required light
now if you want to reset differentiator
to credit if you want to reset the
perform of the service indicator resets
that’s a little bit different the way
you do that is you press the button on
the dash to let everything lights up and
then you step on a brake one two on the
brake pedal and then three times to the
floor with the accelerator within 10
seconds and that resets the the service
indicators and that’s it you’re all set
alright I hope this helped you out any
questions any comments drop me a line be
more than happy to talk to you about
anything thanks for watching see you on
an excellent
